What to Expect in Residential Treatment

Medical Detox

For individuals who require it, medical detox is often the first step in residential treatment. This process helps manage withdrawal symptoms safely and comfortably, which is particularly important for substances that carry higher medical risks during withdrawal, such as alcohol, opioids, and benzodiazepines. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT/MOUD) may be used during detox to ease discomfort and reduce cravings, making it easier for clients to transition into the therapeutic phase of recovery.

Comprehensive Therapies

Please note that some locations do not offer all of the types of therapies listed below. Check the location closest to you for full services provided.

  • Individual & Group Therapy: Explore root causes of addiction and develop healthier coping strategies with licensed clinicians.
  • Family Therapy: Repair relationships and address family dynamics impacted by addiction.
  • Behavioral Therapies: Evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and our new, interactive R1 treatment program.

Length of Stay in Residential Treatment

Residential treatment programs can range from short-term stays of about 14-28 days to longer-term stays, such as our PHP with Housing and Low-Intensity Residential programs, lasting 60, 90, or even more than 120 days in some cases. The right length of stay often depends on factors such as the severity and duration of substance use, the presence of co-occurring mental health conditions, and an individual’s recovery goals.

While shorter stays can provide an important jumpstart to recovery, research consistently shows that longer programs, particularly those lasting 90 days or more, are linked to higher success rates. Extended treatment gives clients the time to fully address the root causes of addiction, build healthy coping strategies, and practice new life skills in a safe, structured setting before transitioning back to everyday life.
