Ever wonder what these terms mean? An HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) usually requires a referral from your primary doctor to see a specialist. In contrast, a PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) offers more flexibility without the need for referrals. HMOs typically have lower costs, but smaller networks, while PPOs might cost a bit more but offer a wider range of providers.

Medicare and Medicaid are both government healthcare programs, but they serve different purposes. Medicare is a federal program primarily for people aged 65 and older, as well as younger individuals with certain disabilities, helping cover hospital stays, medical services, and prescription drugs. Medicaid, on the other hand, is a joint state and federal program that provides healthcare to low-income individuals and families, with eligibility and benefits varying by state. Essentially, Medicare is mostly age or disability-based, while Medicaid is income-based, with both aiming to make healthcare more accessible to those in need.

Insurance companies have contracts with certain healthcare providers—these are your “In-Network” options. Going “Out-of-Network” usually means higher costs, but don’t worry, we’ll help you figure out what’s covered.

This is the amount you pay out of pocket each year before your insurance kicks in. For example, if your deductible is $1,000, you’ll cover that first $1,000, and after that, your insurance takes over according to your plan.

After meeting your deductible, coinsurance kicks in. If your plan has an 80/20 coinsurance, it means your insurance covers 80% of the costs while you cover the remaining 20%.

A copay is a fixed amount you pay for specific services, like a $40 copay for a doctor’s visit. It’s usually due at the time of service, and your insurance covers the rest.
