Office-Based Opioid Treatment (OBOT) is outpatient addiction treatment designed for people living with opioid use disorder (OUD). OBOTS are a type of Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), which is recognized by the Substance Abuse and Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), and the World Health Organization (WHO) as the gold-standard therapeutic approach for treating people with OUD.
OBOTs: The Medication
We treat patients with buprenorphine. We typically prescribe Suboxone®, which combines buprenorphine with naloxone and is generally considered the safer version of this medication.
Like methadone, Suboxone® works to reduce the strong cravings of addiction and reduce the discomfort of withdrawal symptoms. Unlike methadone, however, Suboxone can be prescribed in a doctor’s office rather than in a clinic. Suboxone occupies the same parts of the brain that drugs of addiction occupy – but there is no high associated with Suboxone. Our comprehensive Suboxone Maintenance Program includes medical intervention and treatment for long-term opioid dependence.
Expanding Treatment Options
OBOT programs were created twenty years ago to allow patients to receive MAT in treatment settings outside of federally regulated methadone clinics. Recent changes in regulations allow nurse practitioners (NPs) and physicians assistants (PAs) to prescribe specific medications for patients diagnosed with OUD.
