Group Therapy

Recovery is easier when you don't have to do it alone. While individual therapy gives you one-on-one support, group therapy connects you with others who understand what you're going through. Together, you'll learn practical recovery skills, share experiences, and build meaningful connections in a safe, supportive environment.

Group therapy is one of the core evidence-based treatment services offered at Pinnacle Treatment Centers. Led by experienced clinicians, our groups help you develop healthier coping strategies, relate to other people who’ve been in your shoes, and discover that real change is possible.

What Is Group Therapy at Pinnacle?

Group therapy brings together a small group of individuals who are working toward recovery under the guidance of a licensed therapist, counselor, or trained facilitator.

Sessions are designed to be interactive, encouraging participants to ask questions, share experiences when they're comfortable, and learn from one another. Everyone enters the room with a different story, but a shared goal: finding freedom from the grip of addiction.

Unlike simply listening to a lecture, group therapy encourages discussion, skill-building, reflection, and real-world problem-solving. Many people find comfort in realizing they aren't alone and that others have faced–and overcome–similar challenges.

Why Group Therapy Matters in Recovery

Recovery isn't just about stopping substance use. It's about learning new ways to think, communicate, manage stress, and build healthy relationships. Group therapy helps make those changes possible.

Participating in group therapy can help you:

  • Build confidence through shared experiences
  • Reduce feelings of shame, guilt, and isolation
  • Practice healthy communication and relationship skills
  • Learn practical coping strategies from both clinicians and peers
  • Receive encouragement and accountability throughout recovery
  • Gain perspective from others facing similar challenges
  • Strengthen motivation to stay engaged in treatment
  • Develop a supportive recovery network that can continue beyond treatment

Many lifelong recovery friendships begin in group therapy.

What to Expect at a Pinnacle Treatment Center

How Group Sessions Are Structured

Each session is led by a licensed therapist, counselor, or trained facilitator who guides conversation, teaches evidence-based skills, and creates a respectful, supportive environment.

Depending on the group's purpose, sessions may include:

  • Educational presentations
  • Guided discussions
  • Skill-building exercises
  • Worksheets and activities
  • Role-playing difficult situations
  • Open peer discussion
  • Goal setting and progress check-ins

Participation is always encouraged, but you’ll never be forced to share more than you’re comfortable discussing.

How Often You'll Attend Groups

The number of group sessions you attend depends on your level of care and personalized treatment plan.

Some individuals participate in groups several times each week, while others attend daily during more structured phases of treatment. As your recovery progresses, your schedule may change to reflect your evolving needs.

How Groups Fit Into Your Full Treatment Plan

Group therapy is one part of a comprehensive recovery plan. It works alongside services such as:

Together, these services provide well-rounded care that addresses both substance use and overall wellness.
